Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi: Scenic Border Crossing into Uganda

Your journey begins with a pickup in Kigali, Rwanda, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by your safari guide. From there, you’ll drive north through the rolling green hills of Ruhengeri and cross the border into Uganda via Cyanika or Katuna, depending on logistics. The drive to Bwindi takes approximately 5 hours, but the landscapes—volcanic peaks, terraced farms, and remote villages—make every kilometer worthwhile.

Upon arrival in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, you’ll have the option to explore further with add-on experiences like a visit to the Batwa pygmy community, a canoe ride on Lake Mutanda, or a coffee-making workshop with local farmers. Alternatively, unwind at the lodge and take in the forest views in anticipation of tomorrow’s big trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Return to Kigali

Rise early for an unforgettable adventure. After breakfast, you’ll head to the Bwindi park headquarters for a briefing by the park rangers. Groups are assigned based on hiking ability and gorilla family location, and the trek can range from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ movements. As you push through tangled vines and misty canopies, the moment you spot a gorilla family—playful juveniles, serene mothers, and dominant silverbacks—will stop you in your tracks.

After this once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter, begin your return journey to Kigali. The scenic drive retraces your steps across the border, with an optional stop for a city tour or dinner in Rwanda’s capital. Be sure to book outbound flights no earlier than 10:00 p.m. to allow ample time post-trek. Your driver will drop you off at the airport or your accommodation, bringing your whirlwind gorilla experience to a perfect close.
